My Frontier Moment: The River and The Fireflies

At the age of forties, I still remember two vivid childhood memories — the river and the fireflies.

I spent almost every afternoon in my village swimming in the river with friends. I also bathed there, washed clothes, and carried fresh water back home.

Because my family lived without electricity, nights were magical. As a result, I often saw fireflies dancing in my home yard, in the garden, and in the rice fields. Therefore, these glowing lights always take me back to those nostalgic evenings, surrounded by the jewels of the night.

From Memories to a Mission

However, my village has changed over the years. The river that was once clean is now full of plastic. Consequently, this reality pushed me into the world of waste management.

My first goal was simple — clean the river. Thankfully, with strong community involvement, we achieved it. As a result, in 2000 the Governor of Bali awarded Taro Village as one of the best community-based waste management systems.

Moreover, I later discovered another impact of this work — the return of fireflies. They are more than just beautiful. In fact, they are indicators of clean air, uncontaminated water, and fertile soil.

Why Fireflies Matter

Fireflies represent the balance of nature. If they disappear, it signals that the environment is declining. Therefore, protecting them means protecting our rivers, forests, and soils.

In addition, fireflies inspire curiosity and a connection to nature. Furthermore, they remind us that even small creatures can tell big stories about our planet’s health.

A Vision for the Next 100 Years

Right now, the world stands at a critical junction.

On one hand, the destructive path continues to exploit resources. This could lead to expensive food and heavy dependence on synthetic substances.
On the other hand, the regenerative path restores balance, protects biodiversity, and allows nature to thrive.

Moreover, I imagine a brighter future. The night sky would be full of stars, and the earth would glow with fireflies. In this way, it would be a silent symphony for future generations to enjoy.

Choosing the Brighter Path

At Wise Organic, we have a strong mission — to inspire everyone to care for the Earth and preserve its natural resources.

Because of this, our vision is not just for the next 100 years. It is for thousands of years ahead. After all, Earth is the only home we share.
